  1. Your explanation is great. However, all DSL here in my area is slow! I live just far enough away from the telco station to make broadband cable internet a stellar deal by comparison. Now the telco does allow me the option of getting constantly fast connections, but at a prohibitive per-month price. And then there's the constant barrage of TV ads in our area begging the voters to 'level the playing field' by pressuring the state legislators to force open a market. Sorry, but if DSL were that great - compared to what I get from the cable company - they'd not have to 'legislate' 'fair competition'. Sure, I'm paying about $50/month for my broadband hookup, but I get about 6 times the speed I would were I to 'settle' for DSL at $25/month. Oops! <_< But then, for many people, having the same connection available for internet and phone is more 'worthwhile' than having blazing speed. B) Derek
  2. Oh! Okay, so looking at the seeds/leechers is a better indication of 'liveliness' (to coin a phrase) of the torrent? D*mn! I've *got* to get BitTorrent for Dummies, so I'll have a better idea of what it's all about! Thank you for the input. I'll do so. So are www.torrentbox.com or www.mininova.com also good places, as well? Derek
  3. Part of the problem is that I selected this torrent specifically because it was a recently listed torrent (within the last 5 days) and it was a small file - only 1.07MB in size. So I'm curious how it could be a 'dead' torrent so quickly. IOW, how does one know? Is there a small file which can routinely be used as a 'reference' torrent to confirm whether one's torrent client is working? I mean, I don't want to go through yet another overnight stretch thinking everything is working fine only to find out I got nothing. Derek
  4. Okay, so what you're saying is that it's correct in showing that I've not received any real data for the file, but that I've throughput 1.6MB of other data. I say this because even after 14 hours, the D/L data was 1.68MB and the U/L data amount was 1.49MB with no 'rubbish' dropped and '0.0% completed' showing in the summary. Slow? I hope to tell you. :o IOW, as long as it's showing the green downarrow icon next to the torrent, I should just let it run? Shouldn't I have received *some* data associated with my test D/L file in 14 hours? Derek
  5. Same thing happened to me - with the first torrent I've managed to download. And it's still downloading the file despite having downloaded (and uploaded) far more than the file's listed size! (1.66MB D/L and 1.49MB U/L compared to 1.07MB file size) What gives???
  6. Okay, As several of you know, I've been attempting to get BitComet working on my system. So I chose a pdf ebook (Handbook of the Navigator) as my 'test' download as it's 1.07MB in size. Well, on my 'trackers' pane in the stats and summaries panel, it's showing 'DHT Network' as having 3 minutes 45 seconds to go - and counting down - and it's showing in the 'summary' pane that I've downloaded 1.66MB and uploaded 1.49MB of the 1.07MB file. So what gives?
  7. Thanx. I set it up for port 52,001 - right in the range you mention. And that's exactly when it started working. Dang, it's wonderful to see that I can use bittorrenting. :D Derek
  8. It's WORKING!!! :D Okay, I reset my Port Forwarding to port 52001. And then I waited for it to work through the process... So maybe switching to Kerio's Personal Firewall and changing my forwarding port to above 45000 helped. B) I'm happy. And I'm using dynamic IP! Once this small torrent has finished downloading, I'll try my larger one. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice! Derek

  10. I think this desire came from the frustration I've had over the last few days with trying to get the various bittorrent clients to work. As I've switched from uTorrent to BitComet to Shareaza to Azureus to Opera 9, I've had to re-load the torrent(s) in question. And that meant, since I didn't want to include all 2,000 files in question in the main torrent I'm interested in, having to go through and re-select the files (about 40) 20-25 times in two days and you might get as frustrated as I did. However, I believe, once I've got whichever bittorrent client I settle on working, I'll probably not have to do this ever again. So I can see where this will become a non-issue. B) Derek
  11. Say??? A side issue... I've found several torrents which contain files I seek, yet which also have a huge number of other files I don't need and don't want. However, these supertorrents are the only ones I've found with the particular files. Now I see that BitComet and Azureus allow me to specify which files I wish to include in the actual download - and that's great for a one-time thing. But I was wondering if there is an app which will allow me to download the torrent file and the create a new torrent which just contains the files I want, save that modified torrent and then use the modified torrent to do the actual downloads? Derek
  12. Thanks for the link. I will, of course, scope it out. :D Oh well... Off to the torrenting setup salt mines I go. Hi-ho! B) Derek
  13. WEEEeeeeeeelllll... I would plug my computer directly into my modem instead of my router EXCEPT my modem IS my router. The Motorola SBG900 is a combined WiFi/Cablemodem/Router device. And I therefore don't need to have a converter to change the cable broadband signal into an ethernet signal. Plus, this allows me to not have to tie up my phone line just to get internet services. Now one thing is that when I turn off my computer at night, the cablemodem/router is not turned off. This means that the ISP does not see me going offline and back online every day. It also means that my desktop (which is hard connected from my ethernet port into the ethernet port on the cablemodem) does not have to be turned on in order that my laptop or PDAs may access the Internet. Given that, may I presume that my dynamic IP address doesn't change unless I turn off the cablemodem/router? And therefore, does that not invalidate the 'changing' dynamic IP problem? Derek
  14. Tell me about it! :( I've been trying to understand this process for quite some time. And I still don't have it down pat. I'm almost tempted to Usenet search for a good ebook on bit-torrenting just so I'd have an on-hand reference to study while attempting to get this to work. If I get this all figured out, I'll post my results. Maybe that will help you. Derek
  15. Okay... I'll check out the DHCP thingie on my cablemodem/router/wifi. As I've stated numerous times, whatever I've done with the SBG900 (cablemodem/router/wifi) about portforwarding holds over the *numerous* times I've turned my computer on and off over the last few days. Of course, the cablemodem/router/wifi *never* gets turned off, as it needs to be up and running in order for either the laptop or the PDAs to have access to the Internet. I guess this means that my *dynamic* IP address never really changes, then, am I correct? I *do* know that on those few-and-far-between occasions when the power fails, I must wait for the cablemodem/router/wifi to re-establish with the ISP - and this can take some time.
