red x's beside a few vdownloads

The red X means that BitComet can't write to the disk. That can have a variety of causes.

The most common, among XP users, is file or directory permissions. Unfortunately, BC's default download directory is in the protected Program Files path, which will probably need to change in future versions, but shouldn't really be used anyway.

Anything that can prevent a disk write is a possible cause. This includes a disk that's full; a file that's too large for the file system; a file locked by another process; a hard disk that's failing; a nonexistent intermediate path. It takes some exploration and maybe some testing to figure out exactly what the problem is in each case.
