Try this,

Go to the site you got the torrent from and instead of opening it save it to your desktop.

Now open Bitcomet and drag and drop that torrent on your desktop into the Bitcomet transfers window

Tell me if it works. :)

It's to do with permissions in Vista. Even though I am logged in as an Administrator account it is treatring me as a standard user. I have taken ownership of the Torrents folder and it's OK. I have also been advised to turn off UAC (User Account Control) but I haven't done that yet.

This is a problem for users without Administrator priviledge.

Because BitComet saves the torrent file in the folder C:\Program Files\BitComet\Torrents. If the currently logged on user has no write access to this directory, BitComet cannot save the torrent file into this directory, and it will display this error message.

A workaround is to grant write priviledge of the Torrents folder to Users. Taking ownership is not necessary, and ownerships of installed programs in C:\Program Files should be Administrators group for security purposes.

The best solution would be that BitComet should not assume the current user having write access to C:\Program Files, and torrent files should be saved under the Profiles folder of the current user. It is usually "C:\Documents and Settings\(current user)\Application Data" for Windows 2000 and XP.

A better solution might be creating a separate download directory, then setting your default download location to that new directory.

If you get the download location out of the "C:\Program Files\" path, which Windows tries to "protect" in this fashion, you'll probably have fewer problems like this. So create a "C:\Downloads" directory, or something like that, and use it instead.

I have been reading quite a few complaints about the Vista permissions problem, so it seems best to avoid the whole issue if you can.

yep, my account was limitted at the beginning, but after it was changed to Administrator. I still have the same problem...

Please make sure your account can write data into that folder. It seems NTFS ACL is playing jokes at you here.

No, it has nothing to do with the downloads.

It seems BitComet tracks the downloads by saving the .torrent files in C:\Program Files\BitComet\Torrents. And it seems there is no way to change this behaviour, even if you set the download to another directory.

In fact, I set BC to download to C:\Downloads since the first day I use it, but it saves all .torrent files in C:\Program Files\BitComet\Torrents.

Yeah, that's right, it does and no way to change it at all. I was hoping for an undocumented registry key even, but no. So this looks like another universal bad habit that now needs to be broken, and a new QA rule -- "No data stored in the program file tree." It always was a bad idea, but now it needs to be strongly enforced.
