XVID files

xvid, as well as divx can be burnt to any data disc, and some dvd players will play them, most will not.

If your goal is to make a dvd that most, or all players will play, then the answer is no, you would need to reencode the video to do that.

very few dvd players will play .avi files

If your player will play .avi files, then you can burn to CDr or DVDr discs.

When converting .avi to DVD, your video will be about four times the size, if you want the quality to be equal. So 1gb file.avi, will require an entire DVDr disc 4.38gb
