New "Red X" problem?

Recommended Posts

I am downloading a couple of files and one has the red x next to it. THis seems to be mentioned a lot but not like i have mine.

I'm running vist evaluation copy build 5600, have 25 gigs left on my hard disk (but haven't defragged in about a month) and have hash checked this file a few times now.

It started of with a red x and seemed to be reverse downloading. I checked the forums and did a hash check, got it started again and finished it off. I hash checked it again and it went down to 57% complete.

Fair enough, restarted it came back 10 mins later it was at 99%. Hash checked it when finished and again it went back down to 57% complete. Repeated the process and after a few mins it showed the red x and jumped up to 95% complete.

I have 4 files downloading. 2 inactive 1 going fine and this one. I did have a few more going but they seem to have dissapeared while still incomplete.

Any ideas as to what it could be or what I could do to sort this would be muchly appreciated.

You are using a beta version of windows, so problems are to be expected.

First, be sure you select a default download location that is not in your programs files folder.

My documents or desktop are locations that are confirmed to work

Next, besure you are using a stable version of bit comet. At this time, version .70 is the latest stable release.

Suspect

I may have had a similar problem with 0.75 and the Vista RC 1. In the end I lost those files. I did not notice what had occurred until I rebooted into XP and was preparing to reinstall BitComet 0.70. When I had installed 0.75 in Vista, BitComet installed itself into the correct folder OK. But for some reason BitComet had created a new "Downloads" folder on another drive (C:\). It was putting some of the downloads into that folder while others were continuing in the correct folder (\BitComet\Downloads). Only the files it was putting onto C:\Downloads were lost as in the .XML files the pertinent references were re-written and I do not have the knowledge to create these .XML entries from scratch.

Now I have now also tried BitComet 0.76 and it tried the same thing. I did not lose the files this time because I was waiting for exactly that. I had saved the .XML files in another folder so I could reset the download folder in "Options" then shut down BC and replaced the .XML files in the installation folder. This worked.

The reason that I had red X's in Vista was the drive in which BC created its new "Downloads" folder on did NOT have sufficient space for them. If it had all probably would have been OK until I either noticed different file download % values in XP and Vista, or when I tried to move finished files and either couldn't find them or they would have been incomplete even though BitComet registered them as 100%.

I've just looked through my 3 hard drives and it does look like when it was reinstalled it changed the download directory for this one file. Bummer.

I'll restart downloading it afresh.

How do I copy the .xml files?

I forgot to mention thatI started off a few other downloads but it has knocked them off and the one file i have downloading properly keeps reverting to 16% when bt is shut down (although I have checked after doing the hash check). The other file isn't located in the same place as I found the "rogue" Red x file but could it be the same thing?

THanks for the help, I was pulling my hair out and screeching like a whinney little girl. sniff.

I've just tried deleting all the files and restarting but it kept reverting to the 4 files i was downloading before. I've managed to get rid of them (after a lot of going through my hard drive and repeatedly clicking remove and delete files button) and now it doesn't keep anything in the downloads bit!

Just nipping to the wall to introduce my head to it for while....

Yeah, there are a couple of builds of BitComet that have one this to me.

The files that I copy are:

  • Downloads.xml
    BitComet.xml

and the folder:

  • Torrents

After the (re)installation I can just return those to the BitComet installation folder. Or if necessary I can edit them. I have not had the "Downloads" folder itself damaged (yet), just the files pointing to the download locations.

If you open one of those .xml files you will find they are relatively readable, and editable, in notepad or your favorite replacement text editor.

  • NOTE:
Don't mess with your only copies as there is information in these files which will
not react favorably to being messed with. These files are small and if you have
copies you can always get back to where you were if you make a mistake.
