kluelos Posted July 3, 2010 Share Posted July 3, 2010 .mkv is just a container, like a can or a jar. It contains a video stream and an audio stream. Both streams can be encoded many different ways. If you don't have the proper decoder installed you can't play them. It's important to pay attention to encoding information for anything that you download. The UnUsual Suspect Posted July 3, 2010 Share Posted July 3, 2010 First, check the comments on the download you got, make sure you got a real video, not someones attempt to spread virus or malware. Second, you can install a codec pack, like k-lite codecs. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm Just don't change the default install if you not sure about what your doing. Conflicting codecs can make your system unstable. I use the "full" version that comes with a program called "gspot", it can analyze the video and tell you what codecs are used, but with a default install, you should be able to play almost anything with this pack.
