IP ruls ?

Hi all :)

- I wanted to know what this option do and if I should activate it or not ? : Options -> IP ruls -> Enable reporting LAN ip to tracker.

- And what is a proxy server ?

If you have to ask what a proxy server is then you don't need to report your LAN IP. You also shouldn't use the IP filter as its also useless.

If you want to know what a proxy server is then do a web search on it.

A proxy performs all of your internet connections for you -- your request goes to the proxy server, which then connects to whatever web site or tracker you were wanting to visit, then feeds the result back to you.

If you do this with Bittorrent, then it's the proxy that does all the connecting to the tracker, so by default, it's the proxy's IP address being recorded for ratio purposes. If you are using a public proxy, many other people may be doing this also.

If the site is tracking your upload/download ratio, it's probably getting you mixed up with all the others using the same proxy. So this option exists to have your actual IP address, rather than the proxy's, reported to the tracker, thus keeping your stats separate from everyone else's.

If you're doing this, you probably know it very well because everything is a hassle to set up and configure for the proxy. Thus, if you don't know that you need it, you almost certainly don't.

And just to add, you shouldn't route p2p traffic through these. The only thing you should use a proxy with in Bittorrent is tracker communication.
